March 25, 2018 The Accident and Injury Team

Witnesses are integral in the apprehension of a hit-and-run driver that left a child with a fractured arm, police report.

The witnesses described and further contributed to the apprehension of the female driver in Fort Lauderdale. After the driver struck the child, the witnesses tried to go after the driver; however, when they were unsuccessful, they called authorities to report the situation. Police were able to apprehend the driver in Fort Lauderdale.

The car struck the child when the child crossed a street outside of a crosswalk near 844 NW Tenth Terrace, Detective Tracy Figone stated. According to an arrest report, the driver of the car did not stop to provide help.

Eyewitnesses watched the car closely as the driver traveled a dozen blocks east of the crash to East Sunrise Boulevard and North Andrews Avenue. Consequently, their active participation ensured the driver was arrested.

Fort Lauderdale Police spokesperson Casey Liening said the driver of the car had allegedly given the police the name of another woman. Liening said the driver may face additional charges because of the false allegation, although no charges have been filed presently.

“This is still an active investigation and no further information is available at this time,” Liening said.

The full details regarding the woman were unavailable at the time of this report.

The police took the driver into custody on suspicion of failing to stay at the scene of an accident that resulted in serious injury.

Incidentally, the woman responsible for the accident works at a McDonald’s restaurant. She does not have a prior criminal record.

Judge Stacey Schulman has ordered a $10,000 bond. Additionally, the driver must wear a GPS monitor if she is released on bond, the judge stated.

Dr. Brian Elias, from The Accident and Injury Team, comments on this crash.  “When a child is hurt in an accident, it is truly heartbreaking. This incident in the Fort Lauderdale area is especially disturbing, considering that the child was struck by a hit-and-run driver. Our hearts go out to this child and the child’s family. We wish them a speedy recovery.”
