Two people were badly injured in a crash on the Airport Expressway in northwest Miami-Dade. FHP says speed played a role in a crash that shut down State Road 112 (the Airport Expressway.
The crash happened when a BMW traveling eastbound on State Road 112 before Northwest 27th Avenue hit the inside guardrail. Three teenagers were in the car at the time of the crash, Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Joe Sanchez said.
Part of the guardrail pierced the vehicle, and the 14-year-old driver was impaled, Sanchez said. The front seat passenger had to have his arm amputated in order to free him from the car before being rushed to Ryder Trauma Center. A third teen suffered minor bruising to his shoulder and knees was able to go home after being examined at the scene of the crash.
The driver’s identity is yet to be released as well as the passenger who lost his arm in the crash. The driver who was impaled by the guardrail was reported to have suffered extensive nerve injuries and might require a long-term therapy. The teenage driver’s father said he believes the teens somehow rented or borrowed the car, even though they’re underage. FHP says the car is registered to an owner in Hialeah.
Sanchez says speed played a role in the crash, but their investigation continues. “This accident…was caused by drivers which were driving at a high rate of speed and possibly even recklessly,” Sanchez said.
Troopers also say that the roadway, commonly known as the Airport Expressway which allows travelers to get from I-95 to Miami International Airport, will be closed for most of the morning due to that investigation and clean-up.
Dr. Brian Elias, from The Accident and Injury Team, comments on this crash. “It is scary and unfortunate to see teenagers in a borrowed car hurt in a crash. We hope that they quickly recover. If you are unsure of what to do when you’ve been involved in an accident, please give our team a call. We can treat your injuries and also, if you wish, refer you to a very competent attorney in case you have a legal claim. Since we are NOT an attorney referral service, we have no interest in your legal claim beyond trying to help you obtain the best attorney to help you.”
