Two Miami-Dade police officers are in the hospital following a major early morning crash.
According to NBC 6 in Miami, the officers were both seriously injured in a crash with another vehicle on SW 147th Avenue just after 1 a.m.
The driver of the other car involved reportedly was driving a Volkswagen Jetta in the wrong direction near SW 147th Avenue when he crashed head-on into a police cruiser, Miami-Dade police spokeswoman Robin Pinkard said.
Two officers, ages 33 and 31, were in the cruiser at the time of the crash according to NBC 6. The officers were airlifted to a hospital.
Miami Fire Rescue extricated one of the officers. The officer had to be removed because he was trapped in the squad car, Pinkard said. Both vehicles were totaled in the crash. One of the officers was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital with serious injuries to his hips and legs, Pinkard said.
The second officer and the other driver were taken to Jackson South with possible elbow and wrist injuries.
“We always advise the community to be safe while they are out there,” Pinkard said. At this time, it is not clear what caused the crash but investigators believe alcohol or drugs may have played a role in this accident.
Dr. Brian Elias, from The Accident and Injury Team, comments on this crash. “It is unfortunate to see injuries to three people in this late night crash. We hope all involved quickly recover from their injuries. Please keep our streets safe and never get behind the wheel while impaired”
