A driver of a silver Infiniti SUV going north on Biscayne Boulevard crashed into three vehicles, injuring several people in the process, authorities reported.
The accident happened when the driver of the SUV, a man from Aventura, crossed the median into oncoming traffic. He then hit a southbound vehicle near Northeast 34th Street and crashed into two more vehicles. This was located at Northeast 36th Street, WPLG-Ch. 10 reported.
The incident took a quick turn when the driver tried to get away from the accident scene. He was stopped by bystanders who chased and pummeled his SUV with a sledgehammer. His vehicle was structurally damaged in the incident with its front grille and a side quarter panel dangling and its wipers haplessly flapping across a dry windshield.
A viral cellphone video recorded by witnesses shows the driver of the silver Infiniti SUV apparently trying to flee the scene at Biscayne Boulevard and NW 36th Street in Miami. The video and cellphone images of the spectacle of what played out on the Biscayne Boulevard accident scene has made its way to social media.
In one video a man can be heard shouting, “He’s leaving, he’s leaving.” The images show several people running after the Infiniti, trying to box it in. Then, a man wearing a dark shirt, khaki cargo shorts and black shoes with white socks gets out of a car and uses a sledgehammer or mallet to smash the SUV’s windows. As the SUV keeps going, another man yanks on one of the vehicle’s door handles — pulling it off. Eventually, as the Infiniti starts going west on Northwest 36th Street, another vehicle is seen blocking its path.
First emergency responders arrived shortly after the multi vehicle accident happened. Victims of the accident were seen wheeled away on stretchers by paramedics with life-threatening injuries. A few victims who complained of pain and other minor injuries were treated at the scene and released to go home.
Miami police has arrested the 25-year-old SUV driver in connection with the incident. When officers found him, a police report said he seemed “to be high on narcotics,” WTVJ-Ch. 6 reported. An officer stated that he stands to be charged of reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and fleeing or eluding police.
