Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and Florida Highway patrol units were called to the scene of a wrong-way crash that left a German exchange student dead along the southbound express lanes, near Northwest 103rd Street.
FHP Lt. Alex Camacho said several troopers that were patrolling the area observed the vehicle of a driver traveling at a high rate of speed in a reckless manner. Troopers say the man behind the wheel of an SUV was speeding northbound in the southbound lanes, when he hit five other cars. Officials are still looking into why the man lost control and caused the fatal accident.
The wrong-way crash along the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 resulted in the death of a young man identified as Mathias Akwa, a German exchange student.
EMS arrived to the scene of the accident soon after it happened and administered on-site first aid to the injured victims in the incident. Emergency crews did not give information on any of the other injured victims in the crash as authorities are still investigating the incident.
The driver who caused the accident was arrested and also faces charges for a stabbing attack.
Dr. Brian Elias, from The Accident and Injury Team, comments on this crash. “Rear-end accidents are one of the most dangerous kinds of accidents. Often, when a person is rear-ended they are completely taken off-guard and have not had an opportunity to brace for an impact. Rear-end accidents often lead to serious back and neck injuries. We hope that those involved receive the proper medical care.”
