A head-on crash has led to the death of a driver on the Seven Mile Bridge after the driver of another vehicle veered into the wrong lane.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Kathleen Mckinney,  who is the sub-district commander for the Keys, the accident happened when the driver of a 2015 Mitsubishi four-door car was traveling north on Seven Mile Bridge.

The Mitsubishi driver was about to exit the bridge when a 2009 Hyundai SUV, that had just entered the bridge driving south from Marathon, drifted into the northbound lane and collided head-on with the Mitsubishi.

Mckinney said the Mitsubishi driver died at the scene of the head-on crash while the driver of the Hyundai was flown to the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami.

FHP has not released the names of either person and the incident is still under investigation.

Dr. Brian Elias, from The Accident and Injury Team, comments on this crash.  “Rear-end accidents are one of the most dangerous kinds of accidents. Often, when a person is rear-ended they are completely taken off-guard and have not had an opportunity to brace for an impact. Rear-end accidents often lead to serious back and neck injuries.  We hope that those involved receive the proper medical care.”
